Nancie King Mertz
Paint What Scares You!
This workshop is intended for all levels, as Nancie will work one-on-one with each artist. Our instructor encourages you to "Paint What Scares You.” Step out of your usual subject matter and try something new, or a subject you have long desired to paint but were afraid to try. Nancie can cover figurative, portrait, architecture, cityscape, etc.
In this studio workshop, a short demonstration clarifying techniques and sharing pointers on perspective and composing a scene will be offered at the start of each day. From there, Nancie will assist students one-on-one. Depending on your comfort and skill level, you can expect to complete two or more paintings each day. Individual attention will be stressed in this experience as opposed to group lectures.
About Nancie…
Nancie has spent her lifetime painting in oil and pastel. She was awarded the 2015 Master Circle by the International Association of Pastel Societies, Eminent Pastelist in 2018, and is a Master Signature member of Pastel Society of America, Degas Pastel Society, and Chicago Pastel Painters. Nancie was the Guest of Honor of the French Pastel Society in 2022 and enjoyed painting and teaching for 12 days in Giverny, France near Monet’s home.
She has been a member of The Palette & Chisel of Fine Arts since 1988 and Plein Air Painters since 2003, both based in Chicago. She was twice named “Chicago Artist of the Year” by the Chicago Convention & Tourism Bureau. She was chosen as the Distinguished Alum of the Graduate School at Eastern Illinois University as well as the Distinguished Alum of the University. Her BFA in painting is from the University of Illinois where she was a James Scholar. Nancie was named “Distinguished Artist of 2024“ by the Rockford Area Arts Council, and is the 2025 Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame Honoree in New York City. Painting and teaching has taken her across the United States and to over two dozen countries. She has owned a framing company and gallery since graduate school, and opened an immersive learning center for painters in 2021 in Rockford, Illinois.
