Pastel painting of boats in harbor

San Pedro Boats by Mike Ishikawa

About Mike…

Mike Ishikawa is an Architect by profession. During his vacations, he sketched with  pen and ink. filling many sketch books with interesting places he visited with his wife Miki. In 2021, he published a 187-page book of his travel sketches. Semi-retired in 2009, Mike decided to try pastel painting. The rest is history. Mike has won numerous awards ranging from local competitions and plain air festivals to national and international competitions such as U-Art National Pastel Competition, Dakota Pastels, Plein Air Magazine, and Pastel Journal.

He uses bold, vibrant colors, strong strokes, rich shades and shadows, and varied textures to create an image that is similar to the actual image, but with more interest and expression. As an active outdoor enthusiast, his favorite subjects are seascapes, old fishing boats, mountains, deserts, and images of old towns and villages. One of his favorite ways to paint is en plein air.

Mike is a signature member of the Pastel Society of the West Coast, and a Master Circle Member of the International Association of Pastel Societies. He is also a member of the Southern California Pastel Society, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and Pacific Art Guild of Palos Verdes.
