Pastel painting of woman draped

Prescience by Mary Aslin

“Painting sunlight is glorious, painting the figure offers a tangible story, and painting the landscape yields beautiful atmosphere. Putting it all together into a beautifully designed, harmonious painting is a joyful challenge. The immediacy and richness of pastel lends itself well to this challenge. Please join me!” - Mary Aslin

Come early at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments and socializing.

“Light so much light, drama with tranquility, peace, glow….” These reactions are often expressed by others about my art. Interestingly, I don’t set out specifically to evoke an emotion or “look” in a painting. Rather, I am continually awed by the majesty of Beauty as manifest in nuances of light. That light—whether soft and ethereal or warm and dramatic or fresh and bright—intersecting with the lyricism of the human body, a contemplative countenance, lush florals, or land forms—together, sing symphonies. I simply paint the shapes, the colors, the poetry--the song--that I hear.

About Mary…

As a 10 year old, Mary Aslin completed her first plein air painting (not realizing at the time that it had such a special and fancy name!), seeding a lifelong desire to pursue the arts and to paint the beauty in our world, beauty which invites contemplation and peace.

She most often paints directly from life with florals and figures as her subject. It is thrilling when the unique story of each painting is revealed, one she is grateful to share with viewers.

A lifelong learner, having studied with many highly renowned artists and at the Gage Academy of Art, the Minnesota River School of Fine Art, and at the Watts Atelier, she has read art books by the dozens and has visited many of the world’s art museums.

Mary has been featured in many books and publications, is a juried Artist Member of the prestigious California Art Club, a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and a Distinguished Pastelist with the Pastel Society of the West Coast, and a Master’s Circle Member of the International Association of Pastel Societies.

Her awards are many, with one of her paintings recently honored with the Founder’s Award Acquisition at the Hilbert Museum of California Art and since acquired for their permanent collection.

Honored with many invitational exhibitions: three in France, one in China, and fourteen consecutive summers at the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach, CA, Mary’s art can be found in collections all over the world.

Giving homage to the artists who have inspired her, Mary loves to share her knowledge with her students and has led art workshops locally and internationally, notably in France, Spain, and Greece. She continues to delight in the thrill of painting the glorious nuances of light and color —and the stories of Beauty they tell—from and around her home in San Juan Capistrano, California.

She is represented at Mission Fine Art Gallery in San Juan Capistrano.
